Geoff and Liz own and operate Warkworth Lodge and Matakana Tours.

They have many resources at hand to assist you in planning your itinerary during your stay.  They can, provide transport, a full tour package or just assist in your own plans to get about and see the sights.   Everything can be booked from our reception here at Warkworth Lodge.

 

 

We have listed below a sample of what is on offer on our door step: 

 

Morris & James pottery:                          Free factory tour 11.30am Daily

Morris & James extravagant pottery factory shop, café open 7 days.        

 

Brick Bay sculpture trail & vineyard:        Sculpture Trail $12 per person

2.5km track display of 60 works among the lake, native bush and vineyard.  Afterwards you can linger at the Glass House while you enjoy Brick Bay wines, platters & coffee

 

Matakana Village Farmers Market:         Saturday 8am to 1pm

Bustling market in a relaxed riverside setting.  All fresh local produce and entertainment, Grab a coffee, and wonder the stalls or sit back and enjoy the atmosphere and the band. 

 

Matakana Tours:                                     Daily - half day & full day tours

Choose from a selection of Dynamic Travel experiences: 

Wine Tour,  Food Tour, and our Hinterland Tour that includes Honey Bees, Kiwi Lunch menu, Beach Walk, Sheep shearing & working farm display 

OR you can choose a Customized Tour tailor made for your group this could include Horse riding, Fishing or touring an Oyster Farm and eating the freshly harvested fare.                                 

Example of the Wine Tour and Lunch, personal transport & guide.  $235 per person Tour departs at 11.00pm and returns 4.30pm approx.  Tastings and Antipasto lunch is all included as is visits to other local attractions whilst on route. i.e. some spectacular coastal views, exclusive Morris & James pottery tour.

 

Goat Island Marine reserve

Visit the Goat Island National Reserve this is the oldest marine reserve in New Zealand and has a very large variety of species.

  • Scuba diving/snorkeling – Options include a 2 hour guided snorkel tour!

  • Marine discovery center - Perfect introduction to nature under the sea.

 

Matakana Country Park                           This park has a playground, pony rides, miniature train, art gallery, farm animal experience, Restaurants & Cafes.

 

Many options for the active visitor such as:

Puhoi River Canoe, Horse Rides along the beach in Pakiri or in the Country side at Kaipara Flats, and Omaha Golf Club can arrange some fun activities on there all weather course for group bookings.

Free Fun Activities

Warkworth Museum

A gold coin donation invites you to a wounderful aray of local history including a class room for the kiddies to play teacher like in the olden days.  The Jail from the Warkworth Lodge (which was originally a police house/station is now located here) as well as a Kauri Tree walk – 25 minute bush walk to the huge 800 year old Kauri tree highlight

 

River Walk

Enjoy the scenic view of the Mahurangi River along the riverside boardwalk, ask at reception for the locals trail that takes you all the way to the Historical Cement Works.

 

Local Beaches

The area offers several surf beaches such as Omaha Beach, Martins Bay, Tawharanui Beach, and Pakiri Beach. The areas flat water beaches include Snell’s Beach, Algies Bay, Buckletons Beach, and Sandspit Bay.

Regional parks to visit: Tawharanui Regional Park, Waharau Regional Park, and Wenderholm Regional Park.

 

Puhoi

Classic Kiwi Pub, cheese tasting, Museum and much much more.  This is about a 2 hour afternoon stroll.  Suggest you book ahead to enjoy a Kayak up the puhoi river too.

 

 

Rainy Day Activities

Matakana Village Cinema  - Offering three individually-styled theatres.   Top tip arrive early and enjoy a glass of wine & the front row seats... leather recliners with foot rests. Open daily.

 

Morris & James Pottery Tour  -  Daily at 11:30am, the factory opens the doors of its pottery workshop to give guests an inside look.  Open daily.

 

Warkworth Golf Range  - Great activity for all weather conditions. Also on site are a baseball batting cage, mini golf, shooting range and an indoor cricket shed. Open daily.

 

Marine discovery center - Perfect introduction to nature under the sea,opening times change in the seasons.

 

Historical Activities

Warkworth Heritage Trail Walk

A walking or driving track visiting the historic buildings and other sites of interest.

 

Warkworth Museum

An in depth look into the colonial history of this old logging town. Summer hours: 9am – 4pm. Winter hours: 9am – 3:30pm

 

Cement Works

Peacefull ruins of Warkworth Historical Cement Works.  Take your togs and have a dip in the lake that is formed in the quarry.

 

Jane Gifford Boat Tours

This fully restored sailing scow is moored at the Warkworth Wharf behind the Information centre. It is available for charters, educational trips, and special occasions.  See www.janegifford.org.nz for sailing times

Matakana Tours    -all day tours include-

Provides insightful compare on the local history from Puhoi to Pakiri.  From the Bohemian immigrants to ship building to Maori history.  Even more exciting with the recent discovery of the Maori Waka at Puhoi pa site

Reptile Park

New Zealand’s only reptile zoo set amongst the native bush overlooking the Hauraki Gulf.  Aligators to Monkeys & Camilians.  Open daily 10 am to 5 pm.

 

Warkworth Horse Rides

Scenic farm & forest trail rides available.

 

Matakana Country Park

Waiwera Hot Pools

Natural hot springs spa resort offering a variety of activities & fun for all ages. Open daily 9 am – 9 pm.

 

Omaha Flats Mini Golf

Open daily.  Fun for the whole family this course keeps everyone entertained and a lovely bakery cafe onsite for lunch too.

Bicyle trails   and   bike friendly shuttle service

Omaha beach is a great place to start, on to point wells then through Jones Road to the Omaha Bay Winery, down hill to Morris and James and then in to Matakana Village.  Wine tasting & ice creams along the way.  Ask Liz for a Map, we do this cycle ride regularly it's Awesome!!!. --local bike hire & shuttle service available

 

Giant Sculptures

Head to the Sandspit campground, walk to the end of the beach and on to the land behind the campground to a long drive way.  The first of the many Giant sculptures is a chair with Binoculars,  discover the rest of them as you walk through the bush to the point... come back along the beach for variety.

 

Pink Beach

Go to Omaha when the tide is out, walk around the rocks at the south end of the beach and discover Pink Beach, beautiful shimmering shells of pink.
