The days are shorter, the nights are colder and the distinct patter of rain has been a regular sound for the last few days – winter has truly settled in. The beaches and beautiful coastal walkways our region is famous for aren’t so tempting this time of year, but we know that there are plenty of reasons to visit the Matakana coast all year round. Here’s our list of the best things to do in the Warkworth and Matakana region on rainy days:

Wine Tasting

The Matakana wine trail starts right here in Warkworth, offering an impressive 18 vineyards within a twenty minute drive of our lodge. Ranging from family-owned, appointment only boutique cellar doors to large estates that host weddings, the vineyards are so much more than just a vineyard here in the Matakana region. Sip a chardonnay or Syrah while enjoying the stunning coastal views at Omaha Bay; wander the world class sculpture trails and art galleries at Brick Bay or the Sculptureum; build a custom tasting platter of local delicacies at Heron’s Flight; create your own personalised wine blend at Matakana Estate. With so many options to choose from, a wine tasting or three is the perfect way to spend a rainy day on the Matakana coast.

Goat Island Marine Centre

‍Great for adults and children alike, the Goat Island Marine Centre is bursting full of information and interactive activities all about Aotearoa’s marine life. Visit the creatures in their tanks, get up close with the microscopes and hear the sounds of the ocean in the sound corridor. A fun and entertaining way to learn more about our coastline and the weird and wonderful animals that live in it, it’s a great place for the family to fill a few hours on a rainy day. ‍

Please note that the Goat Island Marine Centre is only open on weekends during the winter.

Matakana Cinema

‍This charming independent cinema boasts three screens, each with a distinct character. Screening everything from the latest blockbuster hits to independent releases and themed festivals throughout the year, there is truly something for everyone.

‍While you’re there, the Matakana village shops are well worth a visit. Browse an independent bookstore, treat yourself to the local chocolatier, or pop down the street to 8 Wired to sample the region’s finest craft beers.

Museums

With so much history to explore in the region, these local museums are the perfect way to while away a few hours on a rainy day:

Warkworth District Museum – with exhibits dating back to the 1800s, this museum offers a glimpse into what life was like for the people who built Warkworth and the region into what it is today, from the first Māori settlement to the later Europeans. Mixing its permanent displays with a changing selection of temporary exhibits, there is always something new to see. Situated in the Parry Kauri park, make sure to do the ten minute loop track through beautiful native Kauri bush while you’re there.

‍Puhoi Heritage Museum – for a small village, Puhoi sure has a lot of history! Learn about the bohemians who settled here and admire the collection of beautifully preserved historic buildings including the church, library and centennial hall. No visit to Puhoi is complete without a trip to the pub, crammed with memorabilia and photos of those who came before. ‍

Cauldrey House & Garden – nestled in the beautiful Wenderholme Regional Park, Cauldrey House offers a rare opportunity to explore a real Victorian-Edwardian house. Learn about the people who lived there from their own descendants and enjoy a walk around the stunning grounds and park after.  Make sure to check their website or social media channels for opening times.

Art Galleries

‍With so many artists and galleries in the region, you could easily spend a pleasant few hours hopping from one to the next. Here in Warkworth, Salt River Gallery and Of Hand & Art are within a few minutes’ walk, and down the road in Matakana you’ll find both the Artform Gallery and the Mahurangi Network Gallery. Showcasing pieces from artists who live and work in the region, they’re the perfect place to pick up a unique souvenir and help support a local artist.

Honey Centre

‍If you like honey, this is the place for you! With a wide range of products on offer and free samples of honey, mead and their skincare products, it will be difficult to leave empty handed.  Tours are available if you want to learn more about bees and the honey making process, and you can watch the bees lives in their hives through the glass wall. The on-site café is well worth a visit, offering delicious, unique honey based drinks and ice cream.
