Mahurangi Winter Festival of Lights
MATAKANA MEMO by Liz Bays | Matakana Tours
From boutique wineries to marine reserves, a sculpture trail, conservation projects and even handmade chocolates, there’s always so much going on in the Matakana region. Passionate about all things food, wine, health and environment, I’m Liz – and I write the Matakana Memo blog to help visitors discover the very best of my beloved backyard.
Now that the days are getting colder and the nights are starting earlier it can only mean one thing: it’s nearly time for the Mahurangi Winter Festival of Lights!
We love to shed light on our local area and we’re already looking forward to one of our favourite events of the year. Falling on Saturday 4th July, there’s a wide range of activities to keep the whole family entertained. From amusement rides, face painting and a snow machine for the little ones, to the light tunnel, parade of lights and laser light show, this magical evening transforms our lovely riverside walkway into a spectacle that will amaze children and adults alike. With food trucks and live music throughout the evening, the Festival of Lights settles a wonderful atmosphere over the town and turns Warkworth into a winter wonderland. Best of all it’s completely free!
The festivities don’t have to last just one day, to make the most of the Mahurangi Winter Festival of Lights we recommend making a weekend of it and exploring more of what our lovely region has to offer.
Friday Night
Arrive in Warkworth and check in at Warkworth Lodge. Nestled in the heart of town, this boutique motel is a casual stroll away from everything that Warkworth has to offer. Enjoy one of the local eateries – you can choose from Indian, Vietnamese, Italian, Thai, or traditional comfort food from one of the nearby pubs. Soak in the atmosphere or head back to the hotel to relax in our spa pool and rejuvenate yourself for the weekend ahead. With a range of ensuite, studio and family units, we have options to suit everyone.
Saturday Morning
Start the festivities early with a visit to the famous Matakana Village Market. A short ten minute drive away, the Matakana Market is famous for the quality of its crafts and local produce. Sample some of the region’s finest food and spot eels along the picturesque riverside while appreciating the live music. Between the music, the charming waterside location and the buzzing atmosphere, it will be a great taster for what’s to come.
Saturday Afternoon & Evening
Head back to Warkworth safe in the knowledge that you won’t have to worry about finding parking for the festival! Explore the activities on Wharf Street and Baxter Street, indulging your inner child – or your actual child – with the live entertainment on offer, take an enchanting walk under the tunnel of lights and don’t forget to hit the disco dance floor. At 6pm the ITM Parade of Lights begins, and make sure to head to the waterfront after to have a prime view of the Laser Light show at 7pm. The festival officially ends at 9pm, but if you’re not ready for the fun to end yet then visit The Tahi Bar and check out what live music is on offer.
Sunday Morning
With so much to choose from in the local area it’s up to you how to spend your final hours in the Matakana region. Nature lovers can enjoy a walk along one of the many local beaches or regional parks: Tawharanui, Wenderholm Regional Park and Goat Island Marine Reserve are all within a 20-30 minute drive, not to mention Snells beach, Omaha beach, Algie’s bay, Scott’s Landing… there really are too many beaches to list! If you’re more interested in Culture, Art or History, a visit to the Sculptureum, Warkworth Museum or Brick Bay Wine and Sculpture Trail might take your fancy. Or if you have little ones to keep entertained, feed the donkeys at Highfield reserve while enjoying the coastal views, or a fun-filled morning at Sheepworld is just the trick.
Sunday Afternoon
Arrive back home and plan your next trip to Warkworth so you can fit in all the things you didn’t have time for this weekend! Speak to our team about special rates for returning guests.
We hope you enjoy your visit and look forward to meeting you soon - Liz
